"The Other Hand: Lesser Known Best Practices"
Presenter
Andrew M. Plato, CISSP, CISM
President and Principal Consultant
Anitian Enterprise Security
The term "best practice" gets thrown around a lot in IT. It can mean a lot of different things to different people. This presentation takes you through some of the lesser-known best practices. Practices that consultants, VARs, and technology companies tend to ignore or avoid (as they usually mean less business for them). Issues covered in this presentation include:
- How “commoditization” benefits your technology procurement
- How to make solutions deliver better return on investment
- Why it is important to hire the right people, not always the best people
- Most security assessments are a waste of money
- Looking beyond layered security to layered operations
- The consequences of ignoring best practices
Mr. Plato is the President and Principal Consultant for Anitian Enterprise Security, one of the oldest information security consulting firms in the nation. When you're cursed/blessed with the last name Plato, its inevitable that you will have a life of philosophical introspection. Mr. Plato is renown for his presentations, which blend profound concepts of business, psychology, personality, science, technology and business with entertaining anecdotes and characters. "The Other Hand" is new for 2007, and produced exclusively for INTERFACE.

THEATER #1
9:45am
"Email Confidential: An Introduction to Messaging Security"
What is Messaging Security? It is protecting your organization’s productivity, its important information, and the privacy of your employees and customers who have entrusted you to do so. It is a business, legal and some would say moral, responsibility. Today, the enterprise network is under attack. From inbound threats such as spam, viruses, phishing, DoS (some of which are sent by controlled robotic networks or “botnets”), as well as outbound content security threats such as a lack of corporate governance, privacy and compliance and the security of intellectual property. Learn how this threat is increasing daily, and what you can do about it.
Presented by: ProofPoint & Structured Communication Systems

10:15am
"Guarding Against Malicious Threats from Within:
Network Admission Control"
Network Admission Control (NAC), an industry initiative sponsored by Cisco Systems, uses the network infrastructure to enforce security policy compliance on all devices seeking to access network computing resources, thereby limiting damage from viruses and worms. Traditional identity management solutions can verify who a user is that is logging onto a network, and what the user is allowed to do, but do nothing to verify that an endpoint device conforms to security policy. As a result, networks are regularly compromised by the introduction of endpoint devices that do not conform to network security policy, which then spread viruses and worms throughout the networked environment. NAC addresses this issue by making sure that every endpoint device entering the network conforms to policy.
Using NAC, organizations can provide network access to endpoint devices such as PCs, PDAs, and servers that are verified to be fully compliant with established security policy. NAC can also identify noncompliant devices and deny them access, place them in a quarantined area, or give them restricted access to computing resources. Attendees of this session will learn how NAC, part of the Cisco Self-Defending Network, is creating greater intelligence in the network to automatically identify, prevent, and adapt to security threats.

"SSO and Strong Authentication for Secure Access"
How secure are your applications and networks? For many organizations, the answer to that question is, "Not nearly enough." That's why more and more organizations of all types and sizes have begun deploying single sign-on (SSO) solutions. SSO has emerged as an easy, smart and affordable way for organizations to strengthen IT security while improving users productivity. With SSO solutions, users need only one password or form of strong authentication to access their applications, allowing administrators to easily implement more secure password policies. With the advent of more stringent government regulations, organizations are seeking ways to further strengthen IT security by incorporating stronger passwords and adding another form of authentication, such as a security card, token or biometrics. The idea behind implementing an additional security factor beyond a password is that it provides strong authentication, so that each computer in an organization has stronger protection against entry by unauthorized users. Attend this presentation to learn about implementing SSO and additional security factors that go beyond a password to provide strong authentication.

THEATER #4:
9:45am
"Dynamic Network Access Control"
Today's enterprise needs a solution that ties together all aspects of the user's identity, device, and network, and can uniformly enforce policy throughout these diverse groups, many of which they do not control. The challenge is that some networks may have a mix of legacy equipment, variety of OS systems, and a distributed workforce. No matter which vendor or technology path customers decide to pursue, they should consider a standards based solution (i.e. TNC compliant) that allows than options to integrate technologies from multiple vendors. Do not lock your self into a proprietary solution that will ultimately cost you more in the long run. This session will address the variety of ways to dynamically address secure network access at both layer 2 and layer 3.
Presented by: Juniper Networks & Structured Communication Systems

10:15am
"Managing & Securing Your Print Environment:
Security & Cost Controls for Print Devices"
According to Gartner, on average, print output costs a company 3 to 6 percent of their annual revenues. However, because these costs are scattered around the company in various forms it’s very difficult to control and budget for these costs. Having full visibility of these costs can enable companies to deploy the proper balance of devices leading to 30-40% cost saving and a drastic improvement in worker productivity. While many corporations understand the issues and secure their networks via several monitoring technologies, they often overlook common hardware, such as printers, scanners, fax machines, copiers, and the new, powerful multifunction devices. E-mail filtering and content monitoring applications help protect sensitive data inside the network, but they can’t protect documents unwittingly left in a printer, copier or fax tray for hours.
If losing this intellectual property weren’t enough, exacerbating the issue are tough regulatory compliance laws such as HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley and others. Now in addition to falling stock prices and loss of consumer confidence, executives failing to stop a security breach may face stiff penalties and jail time. This session will examine these risks and address what companies can do to address the problem through effective document security.
Presented by: Xerox & Aegis Technical Services

11:00am
"Need for Core Network Services"
Today’s networks support more applications, traffic, users and devices than ever before – a trend that is only increasing. "Conquering Your VISTA Migration Fears"
The cost and complexity associated with any migration can be managed through an automated deployment strategy -- whether the migration is done over time or in one rapid "forklift" project. An automated strategy can reduce costs by up to 75%; reduce end user downtime; eliminate the need to deploy PCs to a staging area and manually configure; and eliminate manual installations and configurations. An OS migration is the prefect time to standardize desktop PCs and systems management processes. By starting with a clean slate, organizations can obtain an accurate inventory and put in place the tools needed to keep inventories accurate and PCs up-to-date and in compliance standards.
