"Data Protection Technologies for Successful Business Continuity"

Christophe Bertrand, Director of Product Marketing; Business ContinuityPresenter
Christophe Bertrand
Director of Product Marketing; Business Continuity
Hitachi Data Systems

What technologies are critical for effective and efficient protection of data assets? How do you answer this and many other questions and at the same time ensure your application, performance, cost, and recovery requirements are being met? This session approaches this complex subject from a business perspective and ties them to successful IT Infrastructure decisions while identifying trade offs as we compare the advantages of the various technologies in the marketplace today.

Christophe Bertrand started his career in the systems integration and software business, and moved the storage industry over 10 years ago, with a focus on product management and product marketing. He has authored many articles on Disaster Recovery and data protection technologies, and has spoken at many Business Continuity, analyst and storage industry events. He is currently the Director of Product Marketing for Business Continuity at Hitachi Data Systems where he spearheads efforts to expand HDS's Business Continuity software products and solutions in the fast-growing data protection market.

Previously, at Maxtor's Network Attached Storage division, Christophe focused on creating, managing and marketing replication and backup solutions with leading vendors such as VERITAS and Legato Systems.

Prior to Maxtor, Christophe was Senior Product Marketing Manager at VERITAS, where he led efforts to expand VERITAS Software's products in the fast-growing and relatively untapped desktop and mobile laptop data protection market. This included planning of new products and features; devising marketing activities; developing all out-bound messaging and sales tools; and evangelizing new technologies for desktops and mobile laptops.

At Legato Systems from 1998 to 2000, Christophe managed external product marketing activities for the flagship product of Legato's data protection and management group.

Christophe also served as a senior consultant for various marketing projects in the software and storage industries for prestigious clients in the Bay Area, in addition to marketing management positions for software and systems integration companies in Europe.

Christophe earned a joint bachelor's degree (Hons) in European business administration from Middlesex University (U.K.) and a Maitrîse from the Reims Business School (France) in 1992. In 1994, Christophe earned his master's degree in business administration from the University of Bradford Management Centre (U.K.).

Christophe has lived and studied in several European countries prior to moving to the United States in 1997. He is fluent in English, Spanish and French.

THEATER #1

9:40am

"Protecting Your Data"

Despite having multiple layers of protection, from firewalls, to IPS, to Anti-Virus, data breaches continue to happen. The fact is that to only invest in the security infrastructure is a grave and serious error. The true value to a business is in the protection of the valuable data that they managed, not in the individual systems through which they flow. Learn how the new threats affect business processes and profitability, and attempt to steal the very lifeblood of your business… the data. Understand how new malware is getting more intelligent, and how it is stealthily robbing data from your company. Understand the impact of ‘bot nets and spyware, and why they are not merely a consumer headache. Most importantly, understand how new protection strategies can overcome serious deficiencies in your current infrastructure-based reactive protection strategies now and in the future.

Presented by: McAfee, Inc. & Structured Communication Systems

10:15am

"Guarding Against Malicious Threats from Within:  Network Admission Control"

Network Admission Control (NAC), an industry initiative sponsored by Cisco Systems, uses the network infrastructure to enforce security policy compliance on all devices seeking to access network computing resources, thereby limiting damage from viruses and worms. Traditional identity management solutions can verify who a user is that is logging onto a network, and what the user is allowed to do, but do nothing to verify that an endpoint device conforms to security policy. As a result, networks are regularly compromised by the introduction of endpoint devices that do not conform to network security policy, which then spread viruses and worms throughout the networked environment. NAC addresses this issue by making sure that every endpoint device entering the network conforms to policy.

Using NAC, organizations can provide network access to endpoint devices such as PCs, PDAs, and servers that are verified to be fully compliant with established security policy. NAC can also identify noncompliant devices and deny them access, place them in a quarantined area, or give them restricted access to computing resources.  Attendees of this session will learn how NAC, part of the Cisco Self-Defending Network, is creating greater intelligence in the network to automatically identify, prevent, and adapt to security threats.

Presented by: Cisco Systems / Leverage Info. Svcs. / World Wide Tech.

11:00am

"Dynamic Network Access Control"

Today's enterprise needs a solution that ties together all aspects of the user's identity, device, and network, and can uniformly enforce policy throughout these diverse groups, many of which they do not control. The challenge is that some networks may have a mix of legacy equipment, variety of OS systems, and a distributed workforce. No matter which vendor or technology path customers decide to pursue, they should consider a standards based solution (i.e. TNC compliant) that allows than options to integrate technologies from multiple vendors. Do not lock your self into a proprietary solution that will ultimately cost you more in the long run. This session will address the variety of ways to dynamically address secure network access at both layer 2 and layer 3.

Presented by: Juniper Networks & Structured Communication Systems

11:35pm

"Hidden Agenda:  Ten IT Threats Nobody Talks About"

This presentation addresses ten rarely discussed problems that threaten the stability and security of IT departments. These threats are grinding away at your ability to run an optimal IT organization. This discussion is followed by three salient concepts you can use to combat the ten threats and get on the road to a optimal security and IT operations. This presentation will challenge your perceptions and make you reconsider your IT operations.

Among the threats to be discussed:

  • How Arguments over technology sap productivity
  • Why you should never leave a nerd or a cop in charge of security
  • Demanding unrealistic characteristics of IT staff degrades security

"Managed File Transfer - The Next BIG Security Concern"

As IT departments continually adopt new technologies to improve the performance of their systems and productivity of their end users, they are faced with numerous challenges. One such challenge companies face today is securing and automating their file transfer environments. Traditional FTP systems no longer meet the needs of most organizations, especially when data exposure is a concern. Many organizations have developed in house solutions that are difficult to manage and lack security. An MFT (Managed File Transfer) system should be secure, easy to manage, and integrate with existing technologies.

In this presentation, you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of an MFT system
  • Identify the security concerns around traditional FTP systems. It's not just about passwords!
  • Learn why using protocols such as SCP and FTPS may not be as secure as you thought
  • Learn what hackers look for when attacking your file transfer systems
  • Develop a security architecture around file transfer
  • Understand how an MFT system maps to the needs of the business
  • Understand how an MFT system integrates with Identity and Access Management
